Easter Monday, I was 39 weeks and very, very eager for Baby Sarah to come.
I had been having lots of contractions and so, when I was cramping that morning, I felt like labour could be starting soon. Instead, it was the start of a reaction to food poisoning - the worst I'd ever had! That night we ended up at the Royal Vic because I was severely dehydrated. Our doctor, the ever-wonderful Dr. Buckett, happened to be on call. Once I was feeling better, he helped us make the decision to induce. Induction had always been a likely possibility because it looked like Sarah was going to be a big baby.
By 4:30am the induction started... but it never really went anywhere. Sarah was high. Contractions were mild. Cervix wasn't dilating. My water never broke. And so, a change of plans. By 4:30pm we decided to go with a caesarian and within the hour Sarah was there! She was so healthy and strong and a whopping 9 pounds 13 ounces - I was very happy to have made the choice to have the caesarian!
That first week was a whirlwind! Helping 3 year old Katie adjust to having a new sister, recovering from the c-section, learning to breastfeed Sarah. Sarah had lost 14% of her weight after birth so her pediatrician, Dr. Yaremko, was carefully watching her. And thank goodness for him! When she was 8 days old she started vomiting, and she just couldn't stop, Dr. Yaremko quickly sent us to the Children's. There she was diagnosed with a malrotation of her bowel and within a couple of hours of being in the hospital, she underwent emergency surgery. Her outcome was as good as it gets... there was no permanent damage done to her tissues and long term there should be no complications. Sarah's surgical team at the Children's, led by Dr. Puligandla, are just amazing. They took such good care of her and so patiently answered all our questions. And the nurses at the Children's are angels! We got to know them well during our week's stay and will always be grateful to them for the kindness they showed us and the care they gave Sarah.
Everything has settled down now and we are happily adjusting to life with our two beautiful girls. And we look forward to seeing you soon!
